STEP : 1: PRINT OUT THE FREE TEMPLATE

Print the free template on the colored paper of your choice.   Note: You can extend this activity by printing on white paper and having your students color the the template before cutting.

You will also need to have scissors, a glue stick, and something for coloring in the words.  This example uses markers but crayons or colored pencils will work just fine. You will also need some googly eyes.

STEP 2: CUT OUT THE SHAPES

Depending on how old your students are, you may want to do this part ahead of time and place the shapes into baggies. Keep in mind while you’re printing, coloring, and cutting that you want the small hearts to be a contrasting color from the big hearts. In this example, we’ve simply printed some sets on pink paper and some on purple and then swapped the small hearts.

STEP 3: COLOR THE BACKGROUND PAGE

Although you could really use any colors on this page, you may want to consider limiting the color choices to make sure the students use colors that will create an overall cohesive look. Also, remember that if you are using crayons, students SHOULD NOT color in the white space because this is where you will be pasting your elephant and glue does not stick to crayon wax!

STEP 4: PASTE THE ELEPHANT’S HEAD AND EARS.

Using your glue stick, paste the “ears” first (the two bigger hearts) with their points facing inward.  Leave space between the hearts for the circle.Next, Paste the circle in the center of the of the hearts, overlapping just the points of hearts. This picture does not show the elephant being pasted onto the background but for simplicity’s sake, you’ll want to have your students paste the shapes directly on the background.

STEP 5: PASTE THE ELEPHANT’S EYES AND EARS.

Next, glue on the elephants eyes near the top of the circle and add the contrasting colored hearts to the inner ears.  You may want to tuck the points behind the circle or simple paste the small hearts on the big hearts before pasting the circle.

STEP 6: FOLD AND PASTE THE ELEPHANT TRUNK.

If you are working with younger children, you will most likely need to assist them in folding the trunk like an accordion. After folding, glue the top of the trunk (before the first fold) to the center of the circle, just below the eyes. You may also want to draw on some eyelashes for extra detail.

ALL DONE!  ENJOY YOUR SUNDAY SCHOOL VALENTINE’S CRAFT!
